HTTPS Enforcement Test

Check if a webpage securely forces all insecure HTTP traffic to upgrade immediately to encrypted HTTPS.

PROTOCOL: HTTP -> HTTPS
MECHANISM: 301 Permanent Redirect
STANDARD: HSTS Support

What is HTTPS Enforcement Test?

An automated handshake to confirm that users accidentally typing `http://domain.com` are instantly redirected sideways to the safe, padlock-secured version at `https://domain.com`.

How it Works

The tool sends an aggressive plaintext request to Port 80. If the server responds with a 301/302 redirecting exactly to the identical path on Port 443 with an SSL wrapper, it passes.

Key Use Cases

Securing newly deployed websites holding sensitive login credentials.

Validating that massive load balancers (AWS ALB) have HTTPS listeners configured correctly.

Ensuring PCI-DSS and HIPAA compliance regulations are met.

Advanced Details

Combining HTTPS Redirects with HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) prevents man-in-the-middle attacks where a malicious WiFi network strips the redirect and keeps the user on plaintext HTTP.

Cybersecurity Pros & Cons

Security Advantages
  • HTTPS enforcement eliminates plaintext credential transmission — the single most impactful web security baseline control.
  • A 301 permanent redirect to HTTPS educates user browsers to always use HTTPS for future visits to this domain.
  • Combining with HSTS preloading makes HTTPS enforcement browser-enforced, surviving even a server-side misconfiguration.
  • HTTPS redirect verification is a mandatory step in PCI-DSS, HIPAA, and SOC2 compliance audit checklists.
Security Limitations
  • HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect still has a first-visit vulnerability window — HSTS is required to close it completely.
  • Redirect to HTTPS does not guarantee the certificate is valid — an expired or self-signed cert still creates browser warnings.
  • Load balancers terminating SSL may pass HTTP internally — server-side HTTP enforcement still required for defence in depth.
  • A 302 temporary redirect to HTTPS (rather than 301) does not cache in browsers, leaving users perpetually vulnerable on return visits.
