Subdomain Enumerator

Recursively discover hidden or forgotten subdomains associated with a root infrastructure via OSINT databanks.

TECHNIQUES: OSINT, Bruteforce, Passive
SOURCES: Certificate Transparency (CT) Logs
PAYLOAD: vhost mapping

What is Subdomain Enumerator?

A reconnaissance tool used predominantly by security researchers and IT administrators to map out all active, staging, and legacy subdomains belonging to a target organization.

How it Works

Instead of randomly guessing names, the tool cross-references public Certificate Transparency (CT) Logs (like crt.sh), public search engine indexes, and historical DNS resolution archives to assemble a comprehensive list of subdomains.

Key Use Cases

Locating unsecured, legacy development servers (e.g., `dev-old.brand.com`) accidentally left connected to the internet.

Mapping the sprawling external attack surface during a penetration test.

Consolidating corporate assets before a cloud migration.

Advanced Details

Since 2018, every SSL certificate issued by a major CA is logged publicly in a CT Log. If you secure a private internal subdomain (`admin-panel.corp.com`) with a public SSL cert, its existence is immediately broadcasted globally.

Cybersecurity Pros & Cons

Security Advantages
  • Discovering forgotten development and staging subdomains enables remediation before attackers find and exploit them.
  • Certificate Transparency-based enumeration is passive — it leaves no logs on the target and cannot be blocked.
  • Complete subdomain inventory is the foundation of external attack surface management — you cannot protect what you do not know exists.
  • Identifying subdomains with mismatched or expired SSL certificates prevents user-visible trust errors and phishing exploitation.
Security Limitations
  • Subdomain discovery results are also accessible to attackers — security through obscurity provides no protection against CT log enumeration.
  • Brute-force subdomain enumeration generates high DNS query volumes that are easily detected by DNS monitoring tools.
  • Passive CT log enumeration only finds subdomains that had public SSL certificates — internal-only or HTTP-only subdomains remain invisible.
  • Comprehensive subdomain results from OSINT tools may be months or years old — active verification of each discovered host is essential.
