Email Domain Blacklist

Check if a specific email domain string is explicitly listed on industry blacklists.

TARGET: Domain Name (d= tag)
METHOD: Domain Blocklists (DBL)
PROVIDERS: Spamhaus DBL, URIBL, SURBL

What is Email Domain Blacklist?

Unlike IP blocks, Domain Blocklists (DBLs) list the actual domain names found within the payload of spam messages (like the "From" address or links in the email body).

How it Works

The system constructs a DNS query targeting various DBL providers. If the domain is returned as resolving to a loopback address (e.g., 127.0.1.2), the provider has officially flagged the domain as malicious.

Key Use Cases

Investigating why 100% of newly registered domain emails are going straight to the Spam folder.

Auditing marketing links included in corporate newsletters.

Checking if a partner brand is currently compromised and sending phishing emails.

Advanced Details

Spamhaus strongly punishes domains that register under "Spammy" Top Level Domains (like .click, .xyz, or .club) faster than traditional domains like .com or .net.

Cybersecurity Pros & Cons

Security Advantages
  • Domain-level blacklisting blocks malicious domains regardless of IP changes — attackers cannot simply move to a new server.
  • DBL checks on inbound email links protect users from clicking malicious URLs in phishing campaigns.
  • Industry-maintained DBLs (Spamhaus, SURBL) benefit from millions of contributing mail servers, creating highly accurate data.
  • Regular DBL checks on your own domain provide early warning of compromise before deliverability fully collapses.
Security Limitations
  • Legitimate domains can be false-positively listed, causing business-critical emails to be silently discarded.
  • DBL delisting processes are slow and manual — once listed, restoring reputation can take days to weeks.
  • Attackers rotate through freshly-registered domains faster than DBLs can add them, creating a detection window.
  • Free-tier DBL query limits make high-volume real-time email filtering economically challenging without a paid subscription.
