SMTP Open Relay Test

Verify that a mail server securely blocks unauthorized third parties from bouncing mail through it.

PROTOCOL: SMTP (Port 25/587)
VULNERABILITY: Unauthenticated Routing
CONSEQUENCE: Immediate Blacklisting

What is SMTP Open Relay Test?

An Open Relay is a catastrophic misconfiguration where a mail server processes and forwards emails submitted by literally anyone on the internet, to any destination, without requiring a password.

How it Works

The tool attempts to connect to the target SMTP server and issue a `RCPT TO:` command while impersonating an external third party. If the server accepts the command (250 OK) rather than rejecting it (550 Relaying Denied), it fails the test.

Key Use Cases

Hardening legacy Microsoft Exchange deployments.

Auditing self-hosted Postfix/Exim instances before moving them into production.

Proving to an ISP that your server was fully secured after an abuse suspension.

Advanced Details

Historically, in the 1990s, open relays were the default configuration. Today, operating one guarantees your server's IP will be globally blacklisted within 48 hours by automated scanners.

Cybersecurity Pros & Cons

Security Advantages
  • A passing test confirms that your mail server cannot be abused to send anonymous spam or phishing emails globally.
  • Open relay testing is a mandatory step in any mail server hardening checklist and PCI-DSS email security audit.
  • Detecting an open relay before attackers do prevents catastrophic IP blacklisting and brand reputation damage.
  • The SMTP transaction log from the test provides clear evidence of misconfigured `RCPT TO` access control for remediation.
Security Limitations
  • Testing someone else's SMTP server for open relay status can be misinterpreted as a cyber attack and trigger legal action.
  • Some servers implement greylisting or tarpit defences that slow open relay tests, making results inconclusive.
  • A server may pass the open relay test but still be abused via authenticated compromised accounts.
  • Complex relay configurations (smart hosts, outbound proxies) may cause false-positive open relay detections.
