Open Port Checker
Test a specific TCP or UDP port on a server to verify if it is open, closed, or silently filtered by a firewall.
PROTOCOL:
TCP handshake / UDP packets
TIMEOUT:
3 seconds
RANGE:
1 - 65535
What is Open Port Checker?
Every IP address has 65,535 virtual "ports" through which different services communicate (e.g., port 80 for HTTP, 22 for SSH). This tool tests a single selected port to see if a service is actively listening on the other end.
How it Works
The system initiates a standard TCP SYN connection. If it receives a SYN-ACK, the port is OPEN. If it receives a RST, the port is CLOSED. If it receives nothing, the port is FILTERED (blocked entirely by a firewall).
Key Use Cases
Confirming a new web server rule allows HTTP/HTTPS traffic from the outside world.
Verifying that sensitive database ports (like 3306 for MySQL) have been successfully firewalled off.
Diagnosing game server connectivity issues for consumers.
Advanced Details
Testing UDP ports is significantly harder because UDP is connectionless. The tool sends a payload and waits; however, many services do not reply to unexpected payloads, making UDP results slightly ambiguous.
Cybersecurity Pros & Cons
Security Advantages
- Confirms that firewall rules blocking high-risk ports (3389 RDP, 22 SSH, 3306 MySQL) are properly enforced externally.
- Rapid verification that newly deployed security controls have taken effect without waiting for a full audit.
- Detects accidental port exposure caused by misconfigured cloud security group or iptables rules.
- Provides external attacker perspective — confirms what an adversary scanning from the internet would actually see.
Security Limitations
- Open port checking from a fixed external IP can trigger IDS/IPS alerts and get the scanning IP temporarily blocked.
- A port appearing closed may still be accessible via firewall bypass techniques (fragmented packets, protocol tunneling).
- Port status alone reveals nothing about the service version or whether it has known exploitable vulnerabilities.
- Heavily filtered environments return "timeout" for all ports, making it impossible to distinguish open from closed.
